The Myth of the Perfect Morning Routine

Mom Life

Before I became a mom, I had this vision of what my mornings would look like. I pictured myself waking up early, sipping a hot cup of coffee, and peacefully getting ready for the day while my children played quietly in their rooms.

Spoiler alert: that’s not what my mornings look like at all.

Let me give you a glimpse into my real morning routine:

5:30 AM: The alarm goes off. I hit snooze, convincing myself that five more minutes of sleep will make all the difference. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t.

6:00 AM: I’m jolted awake by the sound of my kids calling for me. I stumble out of bed, trying to remember what day it is and whether or not I actually got any sleep last night.

6:15 AM: I head to the kitchen to start breakfast. My kids immediately demand waffles, but of course, not the kind we actually have in the freezer. After a brief negotiation that feels more like a hostage situation, we settle on cereal. Except now they don’t want cereal—they want pancakes.

6:45 AM: Breakfast is finally over, and I’m left with a kitchen that looks like a tornado just passed through. I glance longingly at the coffee maker but know that it’s going to have to wait.

7:00 AM: Time to get dressed. This sounds simple, right? Wrong. My daughter suddenly hates all her clothes. The shirt she loved yesterday is now “too scratchy,” and the pants are “too blue.” After trying on half her wardrobe, we settle on a something!

7:30 AM: I attempt to get dressed myself, but the kids have other plans. It’s time to fight over who gets to brush first. I finally manage to throw on some yoga pants and a shirt.

8:00 AM: We’re almost out the door, but now the girls have decided they need to bring their entire collection of stuffed animals with them. I explain, for the hundredth time, that we can only take one, and after much deliberation, they pick the biggest one, naturally.

8:15 AM: We’re finally in the car, and I take a deep breath. We made it. Except I forgot my coffee. Again.

8:30 AM: Drop-off is a whirlwind of kisses, forgotten backpacks, and one last-minute potty break. I head back to the car, feeling like I’ve just run a marathon, and it’s not even 9 AM.

So, no, my mornings don’t look like the calm, peaceful scenes I once imagined. They’re messy, chaotic, and full of surprises. But you know what? They’re also filled with laughter, spontaneous dance parties in the kitchen, and the sweetest goodbyes at drop-off.

Sure, I might never have the perfect morning routine, but I’m learning to embrace the imperfection. Because at the end of the day, those messy, imperfect mornings are the ones I’ll remember.

And maybe, just maybe, they’re a little more perfect than I thought.
