Remember the days when making plans with friends was as simple as sending a text and showing up at the agreed-upon place? Yeah, me neither. These days, trying to coordinate a mom’s night out feels like planning a military operation. And honestly, I’m starting to wonder if it’s even worth it.
The Planning Stage:
It usually starts with a burst of enthusiasm in the group chat. One mom suggests a night out, and the responses come flooding in: “Yes! I’m so in!” “Count me in!” “I NEED this!” But then reality sets in.
First, we have to find a date that works for everyone. Easier said than done. Between soccer practice, dance recitals, school events, and—oh yeah—our partners’ schedules, it’s like trying to solve a complex puzzle. We throw out dates like confetti, but there’s always that one mom (or three) who has something going on. Before you know it, the whole thing starts to fall apart.
The Negotiation Stage:
After what feels like an eternity of back-and-forth, we finally land on a date. Success! Or so we think. Now comes the babysitter issue. Some of us are lucky enough to have family nearby who can step in, but for others, finding a sitter is like finding a unicorn. We swap recommendations, offer to share sitters, and even consider doing a “kids’ night in” at one house while the moms sneak out. Desperation makes us creative.
The Day Of:
The day of the mom’s night out arrives, and everyone is pumped. We’ve been looking forward to this for weeks. But as the day goes on, the texts start rolling in:
“Kiddo has a fever. I’m out. 😢”
“Husband has to work late. Can’t make it tonight.”
“I’m exhausted. Rain check?”
One by one, the group dwindles, and suddenly it’s down to just a couple of us. Do we still go? Of course, we do. We’ve worked too hard to let this night slip away.
The Actual Night Out:
We finally make it out of the house. The minute we walk into the restaurant, we feel like we’ve entered a different world. No one is asking us for snacks or demanding that we find their missing shoe. We’re actual human beings again, having adult conversations that don’t involve the latest Paw Patrol episode or the merits of different diaper brands.
But even as we savor every bite of our food (while it’s still hot, no less), we can’t help but keep checking our phones. Is the baby asleep? Did the sitter manage to get the toddler to bed? Will we be greeted by chaos when we get home?
Still, for those few precious hours, we remember what it’s like to just be ourselves—moms, yes, but also women who need a break every now and then.
The Aftermath:
The night ends too soon, as it always does. We hug goodbye, promising to do this again soon, even though we all know it will be another few months before we manage to pull it off. But that’s okay. We’ve recharged our batteries, shared some laughs, and reminded ourselves that we’re all in this together.
Sure, a mom’s night out is a logistical nightmare. But it’s also a lifeline. It’s a reminder that we’re more than just the person who packs the lunches and kisses the boo-boos. We’re still us, and sometimes, we just need a night to remember that.
So here’s to the elusive mom’s night out. It may be hard to plan, and it may not happen as often as we’d like, but when it does, it’s always worth the effort.
