Ahhh silence.
There’s nothing like the end of the day, especially when you’re a mom (even more so, a SAHM). When the children are in bed for the night, you can actually accomplish what you couldn’t finish during the day. Better yet, it’s the perfect time to put up your feet and relax! We all need a chance to recharge!
Everyone has their winding-down routines. Mine has always been a bath and a TV show in bed. When I’ve had a particularly hard day, I’ll even throw in some chocolate and wine.
It’s hard to relax when you read things like, “Cotton is the dirtiest crop in the world.” When I found out this unsettling news I couldn’t help but think, “Well, this is great. I bathe and dry myself off with a towel manufactured from the dirtiest crop in the world, and then I lay down and sleep on it!” Not a comforting thought in the least.
This disgusting fact led me on a hunt for organic products. I scoured the Internet researching the dirty truth about cotton. When Grund America asked me to review their products, I was more than delighted. These guys were the answer I was looking for, the answer to my dirty crop dilemma! For starters, they’re an organic home decor company that not only has 100% organic cotton towels, but also bed sheets, rugs and throws to name a few available items! Check them out here!
Organic Cotton vs Conventional Cotton
Curious about how these two stack up against each other? Take a look at the differences between Conventional and Organic Cotton. The results may be surprising to you!
Conventional Cotton
So you say, “What makes cotton the dirtiest crop in the world?” From the very beginning, when conventional cotton is in seed form, 70% of these seeds are GMO. They are covered in synthetic fertilizers and go through extensive irrigation, which leads to environmental distress. For weed and pest control, highly toxic herbicides and pesticides are sprayed on the crop. When the cotton is ready for harvest, conventional farmers use machines that pick the cotton and then use a chemical process to separate what’s not needed.
Unfortunately, it does not end there. All sorts of additional chemicals from formaldehyde to flame retardants are coated onto the cotton. The end result is a chemically ridden article of clothing, bed sheet or bath towel that you then put on your skin. Your skin, being the largest organ on the body, absorbs those chemicals, raising the body’s toxicity.
Organic Cotton
Cotton grown without the use of plant growth regulators, defoliants, chemicals and fertilizers are what’s considered “organic” cotton. Organic cotton seeds are never treated or genetically modified. Once they are planted in the soil, they are watered primarily with rainwater. Weeds are removed by hand and the crops are naturally defoliated. All in all, organic cotton makes a significant impact on the environment and keeps the body safe from unwanted toxins.

I have to say after trying Grund America’s products, I am completely sold! The towels were the softest towels I have ever used, and that says a lot because I live at the beach, so we go through our fair share of towels (LOL). At the end of the day, when I relax in a nice bubble bath, with a glass of wine and a magazine, I can have peace of mind knowing I’m drying off with the cleanest and softest cotton imaginable.
The bed sheets are just as wonderful! When I first laid on them, it was if I was laying on a cloud. The fabric is smooth and soft! Interesting fact: MSN.com published an article that calculated the average amount of time we spend doing everyday things over the course of our lives. They reported, according to The Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development, people spend up to 26 years sleeping. Why in the world wouldn’t you want to spend that time resting on safe and natural cotton that is both comfortable and beneficial for your overall health?
Okay moms, real talk: How many times do your children end up in your bed? If yours is anything like mine, it’s a lot! Of course, the age of your children comes into play with the frequency, but I’m comforted by the fact that when my child ends up in our bed, I know she’s safe from nasty formaldehyde and flame retardants that exist on conventional cotton sheets.
Make a difference today by switching your family to organic cotton products. You will certainly feel the difference and at the same time contribute to a safer environment for everyone in your home.
